JAPAN CUTS, a Japanese New Film Festival, Opens August 20
JAPAN CUTS: Japanese New Film FestivalKicks off on August 20 as a hybrid online and in-person event. Continuing its mission of presenting a diverse roster of the best and most exciting films in Japan today, the festival will present a total of 29 feature films and 12 short films, including 33 films available online in the United States and 14 screenings of 8 movies. on the big screen at the Japan Society.
The festivities begin with the US premiere of Soushi Matsumoto’s charming sci-fi and samurai cinema celebration It’s a summer movie!, one of two titles featured both online and in person. The other is the centerpiece of the festival Presentation of The wife of a spy – a masterful WWII thriller from famous director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The star of the film, Yu Aoi, is the recipient of this year’s CUT ABOVE Award, the festival’s annual distinction for outstanding achievement in Japanese cinema.
The The next generation The competition offers a hand-picked selection of six narrative feature films produced independently by emerging directors. The only section of the festival with a jury, Next Generation awards the Obayashi Prize to the most accomplished title as determined by a jury of industry professionals.
Other highlights of the festival include The Great Yokai War: The Guardians, a big budget fantasy / adventure show by Takashi Miike; Kiba: the fangs of fiction, an all-star comedy about the publishing industry by Daihachi Yoshida; and Ito, the latest from Satoko Yokohama, which centers on a high school student who tries to overcome her shyness by working in a maid café. A selection of works otherwise impossible to see in the Classics, Documentary Concentrate, and Spotlight on experimentation sections.
All in-person screenings will take place in the Japan Society Auditorium, located at 333 East 47th Street in New York, NY. For safety reasons, proof of vaccination and the wearing of a mask will be required from all festival-goers. Online films will be shown on film.japansociety.org.
