Berlin, March 5 (Jiji Press) – Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy” received the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival on Friday.

“I am sincerely happy and proud to have received an award for very experienced directors,” Hamaguchi, 42, said in a statement, referring to the festival’s second most important prize.

“Where the dialogue and the words usually end, the dialogue in this film has only just begun,” the jury said of Hamaguchi’s film.

“This is when they go further, so deeply that, amazed and disturbed, we ask ourselves: how far can it go? Hamaguchi’s words are substance, music, matter”, a declared the jury.

This is the first time that a Japanese film has won an award at the Berlinale since Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” won the Golden Bear 19 years ago.
